Despite playing for the national championship for the second time in five seasons, the Oregon Ducks under head coach Mark Helfrich came up short in their quest in a 42-20 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on January 12, finishing the year with a 13-2 record for 2014. Up until that point, the Ducks rolled, with their high-powered offense once again lighting up scoreboards by averaging 45.4 points per game.
The lone regular season blemish was a 31-24 loss to Arizona on October 2. Quarterback Marcus Mariota served as the focal point of the team's offense, throwing for 4,454 yards and 42 touchdowns. Those numbers were good enough for Mariota to win the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first Duck ever to win the award.
Two other offensive weapons helped put points on the board. Mariota's main target, wide receiver Byron Marshall, snagged 74 passes and scored six touchdowns. In the backfield, running back Royce Freeman ran for 1,365 yards, reaching the end zone 18 times.
The shaky health on the front line didn't affect the scoring binges, but were noticeable. Left tackle Jake Fisher's absence resulted in the Ducks allowing 12 sacks without him. Center Hroniss Grasu ranked among the country's best, but injuries kept him out for the final month.
The Oregon defense bent but didn't break--until the title game. Under new defensive coordinator Don Pellum, the team regressed from past seasons by allowing just under 430 yards per game. The veteran unit at linebacker was headed by Derrick Malone, who finished the year with 85 tackles.

If they could simply beat Oregon State, who had a very lackluster 5 - 6 record at the time, they would be playing for the national title. His attempt was blocked again, but it caromed off of an official, then it bounced off of the foot of Oregon linebacker Don Graham. The ball ended up in the hands of Oregon State tight end Bill Plumeau. Incredibly, Nehl stayed on the field for another try, this one from 21 yards, and his 4th field goal attempt of the day was good, giving the Beavers an improbable 10 – 7 Civil War victory.
- In 2009 the Civil War game was marketed as the "War For the Roses" before the contest. This was because for the first time in Civil War history, the winner was going to the Rose Bowl. Both defenses played poorly, with the Ducks and Beavers scoring at will. Oregon finally prevailed 37 – 33, playing in the 2010 Rose Bowl. That was their first appearance in that bowl game since 1995.
